Yarm experienced flooding caused by heavy rainfall and rising river levels on Thursday 28th December 2023. The River Tees burst its banks, inundating riverside paths and forcing the closure of flood gates to protect the town centre.
Due to the extensive flood defense system protecting the town, the flooding caused no significant disruption. Residents were advised to avoid flooded footpaths. The Environment Agency issued a flood warning, urging people to be prepared for further flooding.
Thankfully, there were no reports of injuries or serious damage to property.
The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation closely with floodwaters expected to recede over the next few days.
The flooding in Yarm is a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of being prepared for extreme weather events.
