A collision on the A688 in Bishop Auckland caused significant traffic disruption for motorists earlier today. The accident on Fylands Drive led to queues of a mile along the A688, with significant delays as crews from Bishop Auckland Fire Station worked to free a casualty from a car.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) and North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters were required to cut the roof from a vehicle to extricate the casualty. The severity of the injuries is unknown at this time.

Drivers were strongly advised to seek alternate routes where possible to avoid the severe congestion. The incident occurred around lunchtime, and the cause of the collision is currently under investigation.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.02pm today (March 28) to reports of a road traffic collision on Fylands Drive in Bishop Auckland. Two engines from Bishop Auckland Fire Station attended the incident. Crews left the scene at 1.07pm.”
