A 33 year old pillion passenger has died following a crash in Greenside located just west of Gateshead and the rider is in hospital receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Officers from Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them after a man sadly died following a road traffic collision in Gateshead.

At approximately 7.35pm yesterday, police received a report from the ambulance service of a two-vehicle collision close to the White Swan pub, on Lead Road in the Greenside area.

Police and Paramedics including the Great North Air Ambulance attended the scene

It was reported that an electric motorbike had – for reasons yet to be established – collided with Land Rover Defender car.

Emergency services attended and the pillion passenger of the motorbike – a 33-year-old man –  was found to have sustained serious injuries.

He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment but despite the efforts of medical staff he was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist Northumbria Police officers.

The rider of the electric motorbike – a man in his 30s – sustained serious injuries in the collision.

He remains in hospital and is in a stable condition.

The driver of the Land Rover Defender was uninjured and remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.

Sergeant John Sanderson, of Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly lost his life in this tragic incident.
“We will offer them all of the support they need.”

Sgt Sanderson added: “A full investigation is underway and a number of enquiries have already been made by our officers.

“We have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time.

“I would urge anyone who has information about the incident – no matter how small you feel it may be – to get in touch with us if you have not yet done so.

“We are particularly keen to hear from those who may have dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.

“Please contact us if you have anything details which could assist our investigation.”
