Battery Electric Storage System Stockton

North Yorkshire-based Harmony ST Limited (Harmony Energy), a leading developer of renewable energy solutions, has unveiled plans for a major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Bowesfield area of Stockton-on-Tees. Located close to Soccer Sensations and adjacent to the A66, this project could store up to 49.9MW of energy – that’s enough to power thousands of homes! The BESS is designed to support a clean energy future by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and integrating more renewable energy sources into the power grid.

Energy Security

The project promises numerous benefits. It will enhance energy security by storing electricity and reducing dependence on imported fuels. Additionally, by stabilizing the grid and lessening reliance on fluctuating gas markets, the project could help lower energy bills for consumers in the long term.

Harmony Energy brings a strong track record to the table, with 497MW of battery storage operational across 13 sites and another 287MW under construction. Their projects, built without taxpayer subsidies, are vital for the UK’s transition to Net Zero.

£5000 community fund

Importantly, this project includes direct benefits for the Stockton community. Harmony Energy will establish a £5,000 annual community fund (index-linked) for the project’s lifespan, supporting local initiatives. They are also exploring a scheme to provide annual payments to residents living closest to the site, helping to offset rising energy costs.

The project will connect to the existing substation and include extensive landscaping, the retention of earth mounds for screening, and acoustic fencing for noise reduction. A Sustainable Drainage System (SUDs) will enhance the natural environment. Access will be via Westland Way, with traffic managed carefully in collaboration with local authorities. The BESS will utilize state-of-the-art, remotely monitored battery technology for maximum performance and safety.

This exciting project is still in the planning stages. If approved, it promises to usher in a cleaner energy future, bolster energy security, and deliver tangible benefits for the residents of Stockton-on-Tees.
