A stunning gallery of photos captures the energy and excitement of the Northallerton May Fair. The traditional fair fills the town’s High Street with the sights and sounds of classic fairground attractions, creating a lively atmosphere for all ages.

While the Northallerton May Fair has its origins in medieval hiring fairs, it has evolved into a beloved community celebration. This year’s fair, organised by the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain (Northern Section), is open from Thursday to Monday over the early May Bank Holiday weekend.

Northallerton May Fair Origins

The Northallerton May Fair’s roots stretch back centuries. The town’s location in North Yorkshire made it a natural hub for trade and gatherings. Historical records indicate fairs taking place in Northallerton as early as the 1200s when a Royal Charter was granted for the purpose. These early fairs served a primarily practical purpose, but gradually entertainment and festivities became an integral part of the experience.
