Police are continuing to seek help from the public regarding an incident that left a 60-year-old man dead and two others seriously injured. The incident took place on Friday, February 9th, 2024, shortly before 11:35 pm on Myton Way at the junction with The Rings.

Cleveland Police released a statement last night saying “a white Citroen Berlingo van appears to have been intentionally driven towards a group of people on the footpath. The driver left the scene prior to the arrival of police and the van which we believe was used in the incident was abandoned nearby.”

Following the attack, police were seen examining the scene for several hours with the van and a bicycle taken from the scene. Police have confirmed that “however many lines of enquiry remain underway”.

Arrests Made, Public Assistance Still Needed

Two men from Ingleby Barwick, aged 29 and 66, have been arrested in connection with the incident. They remain in police custody. While this is a significant development, investigators are appealing to the public for any additional information. Specifically, they are seeking the following:

  • Witnesses to the incident
  • Sightings of the white van in the area around the time of the attack
  • Any dashcam or doorbell footage potentially related to the crime

Not ‘terror-related’

The deceased has not yet been publicly named. Specially trained officers are providing support to the family of the victim. Police emphasise that there is currently no reason to suspect this was a terror-related attack.
