Martin Breeze (66) has appeared in Teesside Crown Court today by video link from HMP Durham, where he spoke to confirm his name. Martin has been charged along with Shaun Breeze with murder after the death of Brian Darby in Ingleby Barwick. They are also charged with three counts of attempted murder. Shaun Breeze is also charged with perverting the course of justice.

The incident, which occurred on 9th February, allegedly involved a van being intentionally driven into a group of people on a footpath. Mr. Darby, 60, tragically died at the scene, while two others suffered serious injuries.

Family Pays Tribute to Brian Darby

The family of Brian Darby has released a heartfelt tribute, describing him as “an absolute gentleman who cared so much about people.” In their statement, they said, “We are completely heartbroken at the sudden loss of our beautiful Brian. Nobody could ever understand just how much he meant to us all…He lived life to the full, he never wasted a moment. He loved to socialise and everyone adored being around him. Brian was also a proud grandad and his future with his grandchildren has now been taken away from him.” The family has requested privacy to grieve their loss.

Plea and Trial Preparation Hearing

During his appearance today, Martin Breeze of Irthing Close, Ingleby Barwick was told they would appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 25th with a trial set provisionally for July 8th. He was remanded in custody. Shaun Breeze of Owls Grove was not produced in court.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Mathew Hollingsworth previously expressed gratitude to the residents of Ingleby Barwick for their cooperation during the investigation.
