The Hoppings Fair, the UK’s largest travelling funfair, opened its gates last night on the Town Moor in Newcastle. The annual event, a firm fixture in the city’s summer calendar, saw thousands of visitors attend on its first evening.
Attractions include the UK’s largest transportable Ferris wheel, alongside a range of rides and amusements for all ages. Most rides are priced between £3 and £5, with some larger rides such as Star Flyer, Air, and XXL costing £7. The Ferris wheel is £5 for children and £8 for adults. Flagship rides Apollo 13, Booster Maxxx, and Reverse Bungee are priced at £10, £10, and £15 respectively. (Prices may be subject to change during the event.)
Entry to the fair is free, with rides and attractions individually priced. Most rides and stalls accept card payments. Car parking is available for £5, payable by cash or card.
Due to waterlogged ground affecting some of the site, the fair is around 10% smaller than previous years. However, it retains its title as the UK’s largest travelling funfair.
Dogs are permitted on leads, and additional features include a bar with live music entertainment and a Kidz Club each weekend. The first Hoppings Fair was held in 1822, establishing a tradition that continues to this day.
The fair is easily accessible by both public transport and car. It is well-served by local bus routes, with frequent services stopping right outside the fairground on the Town Moor. Visitors travelling by Metro can alight at West Jesmond station, a short walk from the site.
The fair will remain open until Sunday, July 30th. Opening hours are 1pm-11pm on weekends, 2pm-11pm on weekdays, and 1pm-9pm on the final day.
