The Newport Bridge in Teesside is closed today due to an ongoing police incident. Authorities have asked the public to use alternative routes while the incident is being handled.
The incident is believed to be welfare related.
A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said “Cleveland Fire Brigade are currently in attendance at a incident at Newport Bridge assisting police – the bridge is closed please avoid the area” with a Cleveland Police spokesperson adding “Newport Bridge in Middlesbrough is currently closed in both directions due to an ongoing incident.”
Redcar RNLI launched their inshore lifeboat at 15:53, and are currently located downstream of the incident.
Traffic in the area is reportedly flowing well around alternative routes, but allow extra time for journeys in this area.
