On Monday the 6th of January a HGV fire closed the A19 southbound between the junctions of the A174 near Ingleby Barwick and the A67 near Crathorne, the fire broke out just after 17:20pm shortly after the entire southbound carriageway was closed causing long delays for motorists on the evenings commute.
Motorists using the A19 south of Middlesbrough were held for up to one hour after the fire broke out mainly in the cab unit of the HGV which was hauling a container at the time. As firefighters from Cleveland Fire Brigade got to work to extinguish the fire a total closure of the southbound carriageway was implemented between the A174 and A67 interchanges. Forcing motorists to seek alternatives routes across Thornaby, Ingleby Barwick and Yarm. Shortly after 19:30 traffic was released allowing the roadway to be re-opened.
Fire Brigade Statement
“We got the call at 5.19pm. It was a lorry fire on the A19 Southbound near the Crathorne turnoff. We had five appliances in attendance – one from Coulby, two from Thornaby, one from Stockton and another from Middlesbrough. We have now left the scene.”
