Construction is underway on Hartlepool’s landmark new leisure facility, officially known as Highlight. The development designed by GT3 Architects marks a significant transformation of a historic site along Hartlepool’s waterfront and the replacement of the aging Mill House Leisure Centre nearby.
A Site Rich in History
The site of Highlight has a vibrant industrial past. For decades, sawmills and timber yards operated here, their presence marked by railway sidings extending along the waterfront. Remnants of this rail infrastructure are still visible in some areas.
Later, the area became known as Jackson’s Landing, a popular destination for designer outlet shopping during the 1990s and early 2000s. Unfortunately, the site fell into disuse and disrepair, becoming an eyesore for the town.
A Bright Future: Highlight
Highlight Leisure Centre which is due to open in Autumn 2025 promises a dynamic revitalisation of this historic waterfront area. The state-of-the-art facility, designed alongside a public plaza, will offer a range of leisure activities, breathing new life into this section of Hartlepool. Replacing a Local Institution
Highlight effectively replaces the Mill House Leisure Centre, situated roughly half a mile away. Mill House has served Hartlepool residents for many years. However, the facility has grown increasingly outdated, making the transition to a modern facility a necessity.
