A small underground explosion in Durham City caused a brief scare on Friday afternoon. Emergency services were called to North Road, close to Framwelgate Bridge, shortly after 12.30pm after reports of flames coming from below ground.
Witnesses reported damage to the pavement, but fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. Police cordoned off a section of the street while firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service ensured the area was safe.
The cause of the explosion is believed to be an electrical issue, which is currently being investigated by a team from NEDL. The cordon has since been lifted and the road is now open to the public.
