A chilling tale of greed and attempted murder has been brought to light in ITN Productions’ new documentary, “Inheritance: Murder in the Family – The Thomas Kwan Affair,” which premiered on Channel 5 on Monday, March 3rd. The documentary which is now available on catch-up exposes the elaborate scheme orchestrated by Ingleby Barwick Dr. Thomas Kwan to murder his mother’s partner in a bid to secure his inheritance.


In January 2024, Dr. Kwan, driven by financial gain, meticulously planned the attempted murder of Patrick O’Hara, his mother Jenny Leung’s long-term partner. Kwan who lived on Brading Court in The Rings area of Ingleby Barwick was enraged after discovering his mother had amended her will, granting O’Hara a life interest in her property, which he believed blocked his rightful inheritance.

The documentary details Kwan’s audacious plan, which involved forging NHS documents to arrange a fake home visit for a COVID-19 booster vaccination. Disguised as a community nurse, complete with a wig, fake facial hair, medical mask, and gloves, Kwan visited O’Hara’s home. There, he administered a toxic injection, believed to be iodomethane.

O’Hara immediately suffered severe pain and subsequently developed necrotizing fasciitis, a life-threatening flesh-eating disease. He endured multiple surgeries and spent weeks in intensive care, fighting for his life.


“Inheritance: Murder in the Family – The Thomas Kwan Affair” delves into the shocking lengths Kwan went to in his attempt to eliminate anyone standing between him and his perceived inheritance. The program features insights from the Crown Prosecution Service, local residents, press, and toxicologists, who collectively unravel Kwan’s calculated and heartless plot.

Viewers witnessed the meticulous planning and cold-blooded execution of Kwan’s scheme, which ultimately led to his conviction and sentencing to 31 years and 5 months for attempted murder.

The documentary, executive produced by ITN Productions Head of UK Factual Caroline Short and directed by Luke Rufo, with Edit Producer Melanie Hill, was commissioned by Commissioning Editor, VP Denise Seneviratne at Channel 5. It demonstrates the consequences of greed and the lengths to which some will go to secure financial gain.
