The A66 at Long Newton was closed following a crash at around 9pm on Tuesday night involving at least two vehicles. Witnesses reported a car travelling the wrong way on the Eastbound carriageway shortly before the collision.

Firefighters could be seen working on a red car on the Eastbound carriageway, with another black car on the central reservation.

Emergency services from Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade and North East Ambulance Service were on scene, with Highways England closing the road in both directions between Stockton and Darlington. The road was reopened at 6am.

Durham Police released a short statement saying: “We are currently at the scene of a collision on the A66 near Long Newton. The road is likely to be closed for several hours while emergency services work at the scene. We would ask that motorists avoid the area and find an alternative route.”

Cleveland Fire Brigade said “We got the call at 9.04pm. We had four appliances attending, two from Thornaby, two from Stockton. Two vehicles were involved. We had the stop message at 9.50pm.”

National Highways confirmed that contractors are enroute to assist with road closures between the A1027 Yarm Road and the A1150 at Great Burdon.
