On Sunday, August 4th, 2024, a far-right demonstration in Middlesbrough against immigration descended into chaos and violence, resulting in 35 arrests. The unrest, which began at the town’s cenotaph, escalated as protestors pushed burning wheelie bins at police lines, set vehicles ablaze, and vandalized property throughout the town.
The shocking scenes of destruction left Middlesbrough and Thornaby East MP Andy McDonald “sickened”, while Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey stated that those responsible “do not represent” Middlesbrough, and their message of hate and division will fail. The unrest caused significant damage to properties and the Crown Court building, with windows smashed and fires set.
Despite the disorder, Teesside University confirmed that operations continued as usual and no staff or students were injured. Cleveland Police Assistant Chief Constable David Felton expressed his dismay at the level of violence, assuring residents that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice.
This incident follows a similar outbreak of violence in Hartlepool earlier in the week, which saw 20 arrests. Together, these events have brought the total number of arrests for violent disorder in Teesside to 55.
